Capoeira

What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that uniquely blends martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and music into a single practice. Developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil, it was disguised as a dance to hide its martial applications from colonial authorities. Today, Capoeira is recognized worldwide as a rich cultural tradition and was designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.
At its heart, Capoeira is a dialogue—a playfully adversarial conversation between two players in the roda (circle). Through the “jogo” (game), practitioners develop not just physical skills, but strategic thinking, musical ability, and deep connections with their community.
At Gunga do Vale, we practice Capoeira as a path to physical wellbeing, personal growth, and community connection. As an independent academy, we welcome practitioners from all styles and lineages.
